… Describes Him As A National hero
By Patrick Albert
The late Elder statesman and one-time Director General of the National
Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Major General Edet Akpan (rtd.) has been
described as a national hero.
The Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Works, Akparawa Ephraim Inyang-eyen, who spoke in an interview, said the late two-star army general had served Nigeria conscientiously in several areas of endeavours while in the Nigerian Army as well as in the field of education.
Inyang-eyen, while mourning his demise as a great loss to Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria in general, recalled that late General Akpan had lived a worthwhile life that inspired many to stardom.
He said, “As a great statesman, he did his quota and he's gone and it’s left for us now to look at what he had done and see how we can make it better. He was my hero."
According to the commissioner, the late patriot appreciated the leadership acumen of Governor Udom Emmanuel and his efforts in the road sector and other spheres of development in Akwa Ibom.
“We were always visitors in his house and we were greatly welcomed. He did something that really increased my love for him. When we went to commission the 6.41km road in Nsit Atai, he showed up in person and made a comment. He said Governor Udom Emmanuel is doing well, that while he was in government he wanted the road done but it couldn’t be done but Governor Emanuel has done it and what more can he say to him but to thank him,” Inyang-eyen said.
He further extolled the late General Akpan for his exemplary character and goodwill towards people coupled with his interest in the development of Akwa Ibom.
“I think he was a liberalized Akwa Ibomite. He made national impact and what more can I say than pray for his soul to rest peacefully in the bosom of the Lord,” he remarked.
The late General Akpan, who died on Friday, May 15, 2020 at the age of 79, had voluntarily retired from the Nigerian Military in 1996. He was a member, University Council, University of Ibadan and later Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Federal University of Technology, Yola (now Modibbu Adama University of Technology, Yola) Adamawa State (2000 2004).
