Ifiok Udoh, Member representing Nsit Ibom State Constituency.
Presenting the Motion, Hon. Udoh said, the gully erosion which is a deathtrap at the concentric of the citadel of studies is not a natural phenomenon caused by erosion but a-man-made disaster resulting from excavation performed by a contracting firm who later abandonment the site.

Worried by the safety of students, lecturers, managements and other staff of the college as the rains set-in, Nsit Ibom Legislator expressed concern that with the current state of the erosion, the gully may further expand hence, posing further dangerous threats to lives and properties.

"The potential dangers associated with deep gullies, especially during heavy downpours can increase the risk of flooding and lost of lives and properties" the Nsit Ibom Lawmaker acknowledged.
He further expressed concern that: "this abandoned gully could lead to deep cuttings, dissecting the entire land surface with the potential of creating artificial ravines in the area".
Hon. IFIOK UDOH

Recalling that the House Committee on Works and Transport during its oversight inspection to the above mentioned site recently, had urged the contracting firm to take preventive steps towards covering the deep gully, yet the firm refused heeding the committee's directive.

Hon. Udoh therefore, prayed the House to call on the State Government led by His Excellency the Governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel to direct the Ministry of Works as matter of intervention for the filling and closure of the dangerous gully at the Akwa Ibom State College of Education, Afaha Nsit to avert impending disaster or death.

He further called on the House to urge Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Education to intensify its inspectorates in the state's institutions of learning towards ensuring a safe and secure learning environment.

However, the House shall further carry out required legislative action on the Motion, pending when the joints committees shall present their recommendations to the House.
