RAPE: ROBSON'S WIFE CHARGES COUNCIL CHAIRMAN / MONARCH ON FIGHT AGAINST SEXUAL ASSAULT

The wife of Esit-eket Local Government Council Boss Mrs Mariatherese Robson, has charged her husband, Hon. Iniobong Robson the Executive Chairman of Esit-eket local government council and Traditional Council in the area to establish intervention initiative to help response to the epidemic level of sexual assault cases especially against children.

Mrs Robson, made this appeal today during a sensitisation seminar on Rape and its negative effects at Esit-eket Local Government Council hall in Uquo. The siminar was part of the advocacy being championed by her office to check the incessant cases of rape and violence against women in the Local Government Area.
The wife of council boss, commended the First Lady of Akwa Ibom State, Her Excellency, Dr. Martha Udom Emmanuel, for launching an aggressive campaign in all local government area in the state against "The MONSTER" called rape.
She revealed that rape and other gender-based violence being perpetrated in the society were currently alarming, especially during the lockdown period.
According to the First Lady of Esit-eket, the need to take violence against women and children seriously at the grassroots level became imperative because the act destroys lives, erode self-esteem and confidence as well as bring educational opportunities to a halt for the victims.
She noted that the present administration takes the issue of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) very seriously as evidenced in its constitution of GBV management committee as well as the recent signing into law of the Sexual Violence Against Children (Compulsory Treatments and Care) Bill.
The chairman, of council Hon. Iniobong Robson in his response said: “We are lucky to have laws binding all offenders in our state. The battle is for everybody and we are ready to fight this menace together" he said
However, in an interaction session during the seminar by different resources persons discussed on the effect of rape to a girl child and educate the women to report issues of rape to appropriate quarters if such act occurs to them or their relatives in the area.
Speaking at the event, the Clan Head of Ekid Ofiong, Chief Ikot, thanked the wife of the chairman Mrs Robson for hosting the campaign against rape in the local government area. The monarch promised that full support will be given to the women in Esit-eket LGA in the fight against rape. He also requested for sensitization seminar for male gender in LGA.
Furthermore, the DPO Esit-Eket LGA said ” In my office, you don’t beg for rapists. We have one of the most progressive laws in the country which do not allow bail for any sex offenders and if found guilty, they will spend the rest of their life in prison because prerogative of mercy by the state government will not be given to them.
